What is "Dance Dance Revolution"?
************************************************

Dance Dance Revolution is a member of the "Bemani" series of rhythm-action
games released almost solely in Japan. The Bemani series of games is named
after the first such game, called Beatmania, which is a DJ-simulator game
where you have to press certain keys or scratch the turntable in relation
to the commands on the screen.

Dance Dance Revolution took this concept a step further to get the player
more involved in the game. Instead of simulating a DJ setup or any of the
other various music making games in the Bemani family (guitars, drums,
etc) Dance Dance Revolution has the player actually dance physically in
relation to the commands on the screen. The person playing stands in the
middle of a ring of four major buttons (labeled Up, Down, Left, and Right)
and has to step onto the correct button when the screen tells him/her to.
After getting used to the basics, the player can't help but feel inclined
to add a certain "flair" to their dance moves and seeing the unique style
of each player is half the fun of a big DDR gathering.

While the Bemani series generally has not caught on in America, many
gamers find themselves enjoying this game due to the fast and frenzied
gameplay involved and the chance to "be a part" of the game they play.
DDR machines are very slowly finding their way into bigger arcades in the
US now due to the increasing popularity of the series.

The Basics of Dance Dance Revolution
************************************************

-Using the DDR Dance Pad:
While this game can be played with or without the DDR Dance Pad, it's
obviously much more fun to use the pad. It is made of tough plastic and
is much stronger than the PSX version of the dance pad. The pad is
designed to emulate the arcade feel and fun of the game and does the
perfect job doing so. You stand in the middle of the directional
buttons and step on the button or buttons that correspond to the action
onscreen. Here's a quick rundown of what everything on the pad does:

Up, Down, Left, Right arrows: Emulates the D-pad on menu screens. So you
step on these buttons to go through the menus and options and also to
select songs. During gameplay, you step on these buttons as commanded by
the game in order to play. More on that in a minute.

O button: This is used to make selections in a menu.

X button: This is used to cancel out of menus.

Konami button: This magical little button can unlock secrets and open up
secret menus if pushed at the right time.

Start button: It does what one would imagine that a Start button would do
in a game. Also, you can hold this button down during a song to end the
song (it counts as a failure).

-Using the standard Dreamcast controller:
You can use the standard Dreamcast controller instead of the DDR Dance
Pad, but you'll lose a lot of the feel of the game. However, for some of
the songs it's almost impossible to beat them, much less with a decent
grade, unless you use the standard controller. After you've had your fun
dancing you'll probably want to switch to the controller for a while when
unlocking some of the secrets within the game. Here's how the buttons on
the controller relate to the dance pad:

D-Pad: Emulates the Up, Down, Left, Right buttons.
A, B, X, Y: Y=Up, A=Down, X=Left, Y=Right
Start: Duh!
Analog stick: Jostling the stick = pushing the Konami button.
L and R: Absolutely nothing.

-Okay, now how do I play?
I thought you might ask that. Okay, here's what happens on any given song:

First off, you'll hear the announcer say something that is bound to be
silly then the screen brightens and the stage begins.

>From the bottom of the screen you'll see arrows pointing in one of the four
directions that will rise from the bottom of the screen slowly up to the
top, where a row of the four directions sits. When the rising arrows line
up with the row at the top, that's when you step on that button. These are
going to be to the beat for the most part so a lot of the play mechanics
revolve around you being able to pick up the rhythm of the song and work
with it.

A few things to note... sometimes the steps will be on the half beat of
the song, which requires you to quickly step on two buttons in rapid
sucession. Also, you'll sometimes find that there are two steps rising
at the same time next to each other. This requires that you jump and step
on both of these two buttons at the same time.

-Scoring System
Depending on how faithfully you press the button in relation to the
directions onscreen, you'll get a certain "grade" if you will on each
step. You can get any of the following:

Perfect: Right on the mark! Good job!
Great: Just barely off, still keeps the game happy.
Good: A little bit more off, kind of the middle ground.
Boo: For shame, you really missed that one...
Miss: You didn't even try.

As you play, the game keeps track of how many Perfects and Greats you
get in a row. It displays this number as a Combo on the screen. The
longer you draw out a combo, the more points you get. Getting any
other mark, even a Good, ends the combo.

Also, there's a bar at the top of the screen that fills or empties
depending on how well you do. If the bar totally empties, it's Game Over
for you. The bar relates to the "grades" of the steps, so getting a lot
of Perfects keeps it full while Misses and Boos drop it quickly. Goods
are pretty much neutral.

At the end of the song, you receive a final grade based on your effort.
Here's the breakdown:

SS - Only Perfects and Greats the entire song.
S - Perhaps one or two other marks along with your Perfects and Greats.
A - Mostly Perfects and Greats, along with some other stuffs.
B
C
D
E - A lot of mistakes.

Arcade Mode
************************************************

After selecting this from the main menu, you're brought to a screen where
you can select your Play Mode. You can choose from:

Easy: After a tutorial the game allows you to select only easier songs
Normal: You can select some easy songs and some harder songs
Hard: Only the hardest songs live here.

Before selecting your Play Mode, perhaps you'd like to try out a few
tricks on this screen?

-Character/Arrow Select: By pressing the Konami button (or jostling the
analog stick) you'll be brought to a menu where you can change your dancer
(there are 12 dancers, some hidden, for each person to choose from) and
you can choose the look of the arrows onscreen. See the Miscellaneous
section for more details.

-Difficulty select: Double tap Down to set the song difficulty to Another
difficulty. Double tap Down again to change it to Maniac. Double tap Up to
set it back to Basic.

-All Music Mode or Collection Mode (DDR Club only)
Highlight Hard and tap Right several times to access whichever mode you
can access from your game. All Music Mode lets you play every song from
DDR2 (minus the Step Battles) while Collection Mode only allows you to
play the songs from DDR Club that you have beat once already. Also, you
cannot select Collection Mode until you've beat at least one song. Do
take note that you won't be able to save high scores from these modes.
Note, Collection Mode changes to All Music Mode when you unlock every
song.

Okay, after selecting your stuff you'll be brought to the song select
screen where you can choose whichever song you want to play. However, as
before there is a little fun to be had on this screen as well...

-Secret Menu: To access a secret menu, press the Konami button (or jostle
the analog stick) and a little black box will appear. From here, you can
change the difficulty and access any other secrets like Mirror Mode that
must be accessed via code (see Codes section for more details)

Okay, select a song and have fun!

A few things to note...

-Roulette Wheel: On the last stage of Normal and Hard difficulty, you'll
see one selectable song that changes insanely fast. It's a random wheel
of all the songs in the game. This is for those who can't decide what
song they want to play. It also plays an important role on the DDR Club
disc in unlocking all the songs and Endless Mode.

-Step Battle (DDR2 Only): In 2 player games, on the 2nd stage you'll be
able to play Step Battle mode for one of three songs. The basic premise
behind Step Battle is that several rows of blank arrows go up the
screen and it's your job to fill them in with whatever commands you want
to do. Then you'll have to repeat them and finally you'll have to do the
steps done by your opponent. So the harder you make it, the better your
chance of winning (assuming that you can remember what things you did
yourself for when you have to replay them).

Event Mode
************************************************

This mode must first be unlocked by playing the All Music mode over and
over again. The easiest way to do this is to set the number of stages
for Hard mode to one then beating All Music over and over again.

Okay, first you must choose which Play Option you want to do. You can
choose from...

Single: Normal one player goodness.
Couple: Two players playing at the same time with different scores.
Versus: Two players competing with one another.
Double: One or two people playing both sides with one score.

After this selection you're able to play any song that you want to and
the game acts as if it is in Easy mode. So, you won't get booed off
the stage in the middle of a song or anything like that. Plus, you can
play as long as you want to uninterrupted.

A few notes, if you want to have the roulette wheel and Step Battle
songs in Event Mode, just continuously play them in Arcade Mode and
they will eventually find their way here.

Endless
************************************************

Wanna dance nonstop for hours and hours? Well then, this is the mode
for you! It's unlocked in different ways depending on the game that
you are playing:

-DDR2: I'm really not sure... it just kind of appeared for me after a
while. I had played all the songs at least once so that may have had
something to do with it...

-DDR Club: You must play every song at least once. In other words, you
must fill up the Collection completely. You'll have to play some songs
from the Roulette Wheel.

No matter which version you're playing, the premise is basically the same,
you dance to one song after another, with the option to take a break after
5 songs (or anywhere from 1-5 songs on DDR Club) then you start up again.
The songs all blend into one another, a neat feature not found on the PSX
version of these games. Also, combos can be carried over from song to
song, resulting in massive combo potential. Before starting, you can set
all of the following options:

-Player: Either Single, Double, or Random

-Level: Basic, Another, Maniac, or Random

-Turn: Left, Right, Mirror, Shuffle, Random, or Off. (See Codes section
for a description of these items)

-Hidden: On or Off (See Codes section)

-Little: On of Off (See Codes section)

-Bright: 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%. This determines how bright the backgrounds
and the arrows are. The default value is 50% though I usually turn it up.

-Start: Begin playing

-Exit: In case you changed your mind...

Also, from this screen you can see the info for your Max Stage, Max
Combo, and Max Score from previous times of playing.

Once you start, you'll play through the songs in a randomly generated
order and the game isn't over until your bar empties. So basically,
this mode could go on forever (thus the name Endless).

Training
************************************************

Options galore in the Training mode! There are lots of ways to play a
song in order to get better at it. Here's what you can do:

Music Select: Choose which song you wanna practice (you've gotta play
a song before it shows up here)

-Player: Single, Couple, Versus, Double

-Level: Basic, Another, Maniac

-Little: On or Off

-Turn: Left, Right, Mirror, Shuffle, Off

-Hidden: On or Off

-Guide: This is the way the game wants to try to help you out...
--Assist: The game claps when you're supposed to hit a button.
--Click: There's a clicking noise every fourth beat.
--Click2: There's ONLY a clicking noise, the song doesn't play
--Mix: Assist and Click
--Mix2: Assist and Click2 (kinda scary, really)

-Speed: 1 through 5. 5 is normal speed and 1 is ludicrously slow
speed. It's really amusing to play certain songs on 1.

-Bar Start: Where you want to begin practice, in case there's just
one tricky part you want to try.

-Bar End: Where you want to stop practice, again in case there's
just one tricky part you want to try.

-Edit: Allows you to load up your own edited data to play.

-Exit: If you change your mind or get tired of goofing around...

To begin play when everything's set right, press Start.

You don't like the data for one of the songs? Think you could do much
better? Well here's your chance!

-New Data: Begin creating new dance data for a song.
First, you select your song, then the Player type. Afterwards, you
can choose to either load up the original steps from any of the
difficulty levels to use as a sort of backbone while making your own
steps.

-Memory Card: Save/Load data.

-Player: Single, Couple, Double

-Test Play: Watch the steps scroll while the song plays.

-Guide: A bunch of info on how Edit works... in Japanese.

-Exit: Stop this, it's getting silly.

Basically, just fiddle around and this isn't too hard to figure out...

--Double Mode Setting: Choose one of the three controller setups for
playing Double Mode

-Game Level: 1-8. 4 is the default. 1 makes the scoring a lot less harsh
so that it's harder to fail out of a song. 8 makes the scoring really
picky so failing is easier.

-Max Stage
--Easy: 1-5 with 1 as the default
--Normal: 1-5 with 3 as the default
--Hard: 1-5 with 3 as the default

-Time Limit
--Arcade: You have limited time to select stages and stuff like that
--Off: Infinite time in all menus.

-Game Over
--Arcade: Once the bar is empty, the stage ends even if the song isn't
done yet
--Off: You can finish the song while the fans boo you...

-BG Effect
--Effect A: Lessens the Arcade effects slightly
--Effect B: Lessens the Arcade effects a little bit more
--Arcade: The standard Arcade BG changes and stuff
--Off: No special BG effects

-Ending
--Arcade: View the arcade ending when you beat the game
--Dreamcast (DDR2 only): Dance along with the ending song (Note: you
must unlock this before you can choose it... I'm not sure how to do so)
--Club Version (DDR Club only): That weird ending you unlock by beating
every stage with the girl on the motorcycle...
--Off: No ending

-Step Mark Color (DDR Club only):
--Arcade: Regular color steps, alternating flashing for half steps
--Note: Purple normal steps, Reddish half steps
--Off: All steps look alike, like in DDR2

-DC Edit Data:
--On: You can play special redone steps for some of the songs in the
game, created by Konami especially for the Dreamcast release. A little
VMU floats above the songs with DC Edit data.
--Off: Disable this feature.
---To unlock more DC Edit Data, you must beat the game on Arcade mode
two times in a row on the Basic difficulty. The easiest way to do
this is to just set the Hard Mode stages to 1 and play All Music over
and over so you unlock Event Mode at the same time.

-Exit: The end

This section allows you to view certain information about the things
that you do in the game as you continue to unlock features and modes
and the like. Isn't much help to non-Japanese people.

Bonus Track (DDR2 Only)
************************************************

First you choose Single, Versus, or Double...

After the selection is made, you're allowed to play 7 songs from DDR3,
some of which are really awesome. You can only play them in Basic and
Another difficulty. As usual, press the Konami button (or jostle the
analog stick) to bring up the secret menu to turn on and off various
features. See the Song Database for more information.

SSR Bonus Track (DDR2 Only)
************************************************

To unlock this mode you must first play all 7 songs of Bonus Track mode.
To access this mode, press the Konami button (or jostle the analog stick)
on the main mode select screen and Bonus Track will turn into SSR Bonus
Track.

First you choose Single, Versus, or Double...

After the selection is made, you're allowed to play all 7 songs from DDR3
in Step Step Revolution difficulty. This is the DDR3 equivalent to Maniac
difficulty and these SSR songs are insanely hard. Good luck mastering
these songs!

Extra Track (DDR2 Only)
************************************************

To access this feature, you must play the Dreamcast version of the
ending once. Then you can choose this anytime you want and you'll be able
to play the ending song at any time. To access this feature, press the
Konami button (or jostle the analog stick) on the main mode select screen
and Bonus Track will turn into SSR Bonus Track and then Extra Track.

-Dancers

Each player has twelves different dancers to choose from, 9 of which are
hidden and must be unlocked (just keep playing for a while). To choose
the character, step on the Konami button (or jostle the analog stick) on
the Mode Select screen in Arcade Mode

Both DDR2 and DDR Club allow you to select different types of things to
use for arrows, but the choices are different per game. You can choose on
the same screen as the Character Select.

-DDR2
--The normal arrows
--A goofy hand with a finger pointing each direction
--The letters X, A, Y, B as if you were only using the buttons on the
standard controller
--Japanese kanji for each direction
--A circle with an arrow on it
--A circle that opens in the direction you are to push
--An eye looking in each direction
--Pencils pointing in each direction
--A variation of the normal arrows

-DDR Club
--The normal arrows
--Identical bars (this is for experts only!)
--Star Trek logo-like arrows
--Japanese kanji for each direction

-Announcer Phrases:

DDR just isn't DDR without the goofy announcer... he helps add character
to the game with his silly phrases. So I thought I'd notate some of the
more amusing ones just for the heck of it.

Codes
************************************************

What's a game without some form of codes to play with? To enter the
following codes, press the Konami button (or jostle the Analog stick) on
the song select screen to bring up the little menu. On the menu, enter the
codes:

Mirror Mode: Left, Right, Left, Right, Left, Right, Left, Right
Mirror Mode causes the steps to fall in the opposite manner that they
would normally fall in. So, all left steps in the song would be right
steps instead, all right steps would be left steps, up would be down, and
down would be up.

Left Mode: Left, Left, Left, Left, Left, Left, Left, Left
Left Mode causes the steps to all shift to the left (counterclockwise) 90
degrees so the left steps become down steps, down becomes right, right
becomes up, and up becomes left. This cannot be used in Double play.

Right Mode: Right, Right, Right, Right, Right, Right, Right, Right
Right Mode causes the steps to all shift to the right (clockwise) 90
degrees so the left steps become up steps, up becomes right, right becomes
down, and down becomes left. This cannot be used in Double play.

Hidden Mode: Up, Down, Up, Down, Up, Down, Up, Down
Hidden Mode causes the steps to vanish as they near the top of the screen,
thus making it much harder to play the game. Not recommended for beginners
(or for experts for that matter, it's just an annoyance)

Little Mode: Left, Down, Right, Down, Left, Down, Right, Down, Up
Little Mode eliminates the "little" steps in a song (ie the half steps)
which makes a stage much easier to beat. This is recommended for beginners
to try until they can move their feet fast enough to hit the half notes.

Shuffle Mode: Up, Down, Left, Right, Down, Up, Right, Left
Shuffle Mode randomly assigns the steps to a different direction. This
cannot be used in Double play.

Note: Once the codes have been entered they will remain in the menu so
they don't need to be entered again. Hidden and Little can both be either
on or off while only 1 of Mirror, Left, Right, Shuffle can be used at a
time.
