FAQ History
=========================

I began playing DDR around the month of August, 2002. I learned how to play
on the DDR: Konamix version of the game, which is for the Sony Playstation.
I decided to write this simple FAQ and song list when I noticed that there
weren't any on GameFAQs for Dance Dance Revolution Extreme.

=========================

1. DDR Basics
==============================
A. How does it work?

Dance Dance Revolution is a very simple game to learn, but very difficult to
master. The game works on the principle that when the moving colored arrows
reach the hollow arrows at the top of the screen, you respond by pressing that
button on the metal dance pad with your foot. Every dance pad used for this
game looks basically like this.

B. Selecting Your Difficulty and Song

After you have put in your quarter, you must press the flashing button in
front of you, located underneath the screen. It is between two arrows which
point left and right. This brings up a menu which allows you to choose from
between the Single, Versus and Double modes. If you're are just beginning and
playing alone, you will want to choose the single mode (You must have at least
2 credits in the machine before you are able to select the Versus or Double
mode). This guide does not cover Double mode. After selecting Single mode,
you will be given the option of choosing from 7 difficulties, including 2
special difficulties. The regular difficulties are:

1. Beginner: The very easiest mode. Instead of regular backgrounds, there is
an animated dancer in the background who will show you how to step.

Note: In beginner mode, it is not possible to fail on your first song, or
fail in the middle of the second or third song.

2. Light: The second easiest difficulty. After learning the basics, you are
ready to use the light mode. Songs have more steps and the step combinations
are slightly more difficult than those of the beginner mode.

3. Standard: The middle grounds for difficulty in songs. These songs usually
have much more numerous arrows, and step combinations become much more
difficult.

4. Heavy: The hardest normal mode of play in DDR: Extreme. Songs often have 2
times as many arrows (or more) on this mode than in their Standard mode
counterparts. Step combinations become insanely difficult. This mode is
recommended for only the best of players.

5. Oni: A difficulty level available only on certain songs. It is more
difficult than heavy mode. Some songs can only be played on this mode. Others
that have regular difficulties as well can be found by pressing the down
button quickly. This mode is recommended for the best of the best players.

Special difficulties are made available by moving your selected difficulty
past Heavy mode. The special difficulties include:

1. Non-Stop Challenge Courses: In this mode, you play 4 songs continuously on
various difficulty levels. There are preselected courses, and courses that
vary from machine to machine.

2. Challenge "Oni" Courses: This is easily the most difficult mode to select.
You have a special life meter which has 4 pieces to it. Every time you score
less than "Great" on the timing of your step, (in other words, if you get a
good, a boo, or a miss) you lose a piece of that bar. When you lose all four
pieces, it is game over. There multiple songs in each course. After passing a
song, you receive 1 extra piece for your meter.

Once you have chosen your difficulty, it is time to pick a song. Songs come in
all forms, speeds, and difficulties. The speeds are displayed as "Beats Per
Minute", and can be found by looking at the upper left corner of the
television screen. The difficulty is found in the lower left corner of the
screen. The difficulty is displayed in feet, and is out of 10. This gives a
person a basic idea of how difficult a song is. If you are just beginning, it
is wise to pick a song with a difficulty rating of 1 or 2 feet.

C. The Life Bar

The life bars are located in the upper corners of the display, while you are
playing a song. They are filled with a green substance. Successfully
completing steps causes it to rise, while missing them causes the life bar
to deplete. If your life bar is getting low, then "Warning" will begin to
flash in the background. When the life bar is full, it will begin to glow
orange. If the life bar becomes entirely empty, then it is game over.

D. Step Modifiers

The step modifiers can be accessed by holding down the button while selecting
a song. They can be used to make a song either more difficult, or simpler.
They are:

Speed: 1x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x, 5x, 8x : Changes the speed of the arrows, but not the
music.

Appearance: Visible, Hidden, Sudden, Stealth

Visible: Arrows appear normally.
Hidden: Roughly 2/3 of the way up the screen, the arrows disappear
Sudden: Roughly 2/3 of the way up the screen, the arrows appear
Stealth: Arrows do not appear at all. In order to do this, you must have the
song memorized completely.

Turn: Off, Mirror, Left, Right, Shuffle

Mirror: The steps are reversed
Left: Steps are turned 90 degrees to the left
Right: Steps are turned 90 degrees to the right
Shuffle: Steps are randomly redistributed

Other: Little, Flat, Solo, Dark

Little: All off-beat arrows are removed.
Flat: All arrows appear the same color.
Solo: Arrows of different beats are more distinctively colored (on-beat
arrows are red, off-beats are blue, gallops are purple, etc.).
Dark: The "Hollow" arrows at the top of the screen are removed.

Scroll: Standard, Reverse

Standard: Arrows move up, like normal
Reverse: Arrows move towards the bottom of the screen, making it more
difficult

Boost Mode: Off, On

Off: Arrows move normally
On: Arrows move slow at first, but gain speed on the way up

Freeze Arrow: On, Off

On: Green Freeze arrows appear liek they usually do
Off: Freeze arrows turn into regular arrows.

Step: Beginner, Light, Standard, Heavy, Oni

This is explained earlier in the FAQ.

E. The "Groove Radar"

The groove meter is located in the middle-far left part of the screen. Maybe
a little below the middle. Anyway, it tells you what kind of steps will be in
the song. It tells you how much Air, Stream, Chaos, Freezes and Voltage is
in a song. Here are simple definitions for these terms.

Air: The amount of jump steps that are in a song.

Stream: The amount of arrows that are simple streams of the same arrows.
Streams are usually very easy to perform, but tiring.

Chaos: Chaos is what makes songs very difficult sometimes. Chaos is when the
steps are all over the place. Chaotic songs are usually difficult.

Freezes: The amount of freeze steps that a song has.

Voltage: How dense the steps are at any given point in the song. High voltage
usually means that at least 1 part of the song will be difficult to
read and perform.

2. Improving Your Dancing
==============================

A. Simple Maneuvers

These simple maneuvers are essential to learning the game and will be used
time and time again throughout your DDR Extreme journey.

***Placing Your Feet***

This is quite important, but so simple that it amazes me when people don't do
it without thinking. Once you hit an arrow, DO NOT move that foot back to the
little metal island in the middle of the dance pad. This wastes precious
reaction time, and serves no purpose at all. Chances are that after you press
the arrow with that foot, you will quickly have to press a button with your
other foot. For example, if the steps are "left, right, left, right", you would
use your left foot to hit the left arrow, and right foot to hit the right
arrow. Since you will soon have to hit the left and right arrows again with the
same foot, it just makes sense to leave them on the arrow.

***Timing Your Jumps***

Jumps are steps where 2 arrows must be pressed at the exact same time. Learning
when to jump isn't too difficult, but is vital in order to learn how to play
DDR, and play it well. First, you will want to learn how long it takes for your
feet to come back to the dance pad after you jump. You do not need to time it
with a watch or anything, simply realize how long it takes. After that, select
a song. When the colored arrows start moving towards the hollow ones at the
top, take note of how fast they are moving. Then once a jump shows up, position
yourself so that you can easily jump onto the 2 arrows you need to press. Try
to jump so that you hit the buttons as soon as the arrows reach the hollow
arrows. With a small amount of practice, this technique can be mastered. In
this FAQ I will be referring to jumps using the right and left arrows as
"right and left" jumps, and the same for jumps using any arrows.

***Changing Jumps. QUICKLY***

Once you start some slightly more difficult songs, you will need to jump
quickly from a "right and left" jump to a "up and down" jump. To do this, you
must use the same principles for timing your jumps, and add in a 90 degree
turn. This shouldn't be too difficult. These types of steps are the type you
learn quickly, and continue using no matter what the difficulty level of the
game is.

***Running the "Streams" of Arrows"

Also in the slightly harder than beginner songs, you will begin to encounter
quick streams of arrows. These are continous arrows (3 or more of the same 2
steps), which need to be pressed quickly. If the stream, for example, is
"left, right, left, right, left", then you must press them in time with the
music like usual, making sure to keep your feet on the arrows they are being
used to press. Some streams include all four arrows, such as "left, down,
up, right". These are performed by using the left foot on the left arrow, then
using the right foot to press the down arrow. After that, swing your left foot
onto the up arrow, then use your right foot to press the right arrow. These
steps take practice, but are never difficult to master.

***Jumping Corners***

Once you get into a few of the harder songs, you will have to start doing
corner jumps. A corner jump is any jump that uses that aren't facing each
other. At times you may have to jump corners quickly. For example, if you have
to jump from "up and right" to "up and left", simply swing your right foot
around while you're in the air and keep your left foot over the up arrow.
Another type of jump you may encounter is from "up and right" to "down and
left" These are simpler than they look. All you have to do is jump directly
backwards. It is simple to judge the distance, and you land on the correct
arrows in one simple movement.

B. Intermediate Moves

These moves are for slightly more skilled players, and should not be attempted
until you can at least pass songs that are rated between 4-6 feet.

***Gallops***

Galloping is almost exactly how it sounds. In fact, when performing gallops on
the dance pad, it will sound like a horse galloping! Gallop steps are when you
must quickly press, for example, "left, right", then directly after, "right,
left". That is a gallop in its simplest form. To perform this move, all you
have to do is jump in the air, and make sure that your left foot hits the left
arrow a little before your right foot hits the right arrow. After this, jump
again, only making sure that your right foot hits the ground first this time.

Gallops become a lot more complicated in the harder songs of the game. Gallop
parts are a lot long and require much more skill to pull them off. Some parts
may appear like this, "Up, right, right, down, down, left, left, up". You will
be forced to be almost turned around while galloping. You would start by using
your left foot to hit the "up", then use your right foot to hit the "right".
After this, you would use your right foot again to hit the second "right"
arrow, then swing your left foot around and use it to hit the "down" arrow. Use
your left foot again to hit the second "down" arrow, and swing your right foot
over to hit the "left arrow". At this point, you will be look at the screen
over your shoulder. This may feel uncomfortable at first, but you will get used
to it with a little practice. Anyways, you would then use your right foot again
to hit the "left" arrow, and swing your left foot over to the "up" arrow, thus
finishing that particular section of gallops. There is a little pause between
each set of 2 arrows during a section of gallops. Congratulations! You just
learned the important move known as the Gallop. With practice it will both look
and feel smooth.

***Basic Crossovers***

The crossover is a maneuver in which you use one foot continually on the same
arrow, while moving the other foot all around to 2 or more different arrows.
An example of where you would use crossovers is if the arrows appeared in this
order, "down, left, down, right, down, up". You can use whichever foot is more
comfortable in order to hit the "down" arrow, then use the other to hit the
"left" arrow. Use the first foot to hit the second "down" arrow, and then use
your "moving" foot to hit the "right" arrow. Do the same for the "down, up"
part. This is a basic crossover. Crossovers appear all over the place, and by
using them, you give yourself very valuable time and you make your steps much
more accurate.

C. Advanced Techniques

These techniques aren't needed until you reach the most difficult of songs in
the game. They are very hard to learn and take a large amount of practice. Do
not be discouraged if you cannot perform them the first time you try them.

***Advanced Crossovers***

These use the same principles as basic crossovers, but you will be forced to
move both feet around the dance pad. An example of an Advanced Crossover would
be if the steps were, "up, down, up, left, up, down, right, down, left". You
would start by using your left foot to hit the "up", and your right to hit the
"down". Then you would use your left foot again to hit the second "up", and the
right foot to hit the "left" arrow. Then use your left foot to hit "up" again
and your right to hit "down". Then, you will be forced to switch which foot
will stay in the same spot. You will use your left foot to hit the "right"
arrow, and hit the "down" again with your right foot. Then you would use your
right foot to hit the final arrow, which is "left". This maneuver will require
you to look over your shoulder, and does take a large amount of practice to
learn. Keep trying until you figure it out. If it doesn't feel very
comfortable, you may be doing something incorrectly.
